Vanek and Miller upset with Pominville trade

Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek, two of the longest tenured Sabres, lost a long-time friend at yesterday’s trade deadline.

Miller, speaking about former teammate Jason Pominville, did not come off as very happy during his media availability this afternoon.

“Not a great day,” said Ryan Miller. “That’s what happens when you don’t perform in season as a team.”

Thomas Vanek did not seem very happy either.

“It hasn’t happened in the past,” Vanek said. “Now with Jason gone, that obviously sends a message that change is happening.”

This trade comes just a few days after Vanek told the Buffalo media that he was not looking to be apart of a rebuild, and he went on to echo that thought this afternoon.

“It’s hard to say yes or no (on staying in Buffalo) because no one has let me know what direction this is heading,” Vanek said. “Again, we’ll finish the year out and I’m sure at least I would expect them to let me know what the future is with myself.”

Ryan Miller had just about the same thing to say to the media.

“I have to talk to Darcy about it,” Miller said. “This is obviously something that hasn’t been planned out.”

There is not much more that can be said from either player at the moment, but this situation is something that will obviously play out throughout the final weeks of the season and into the offseason.

Stay tuned to Sabres Hockey Central for the latest.

Charlie - why is it whenever anyone doesn't know what they are talking about they have to drop the f bomb. You need to realize that the "core" players of Pominville, Hecht, Stafford, Vanek, et al just didn't work out. Gaustad lost his edge a couple of years ago and while he was good at faceoffs, he expected Kaleta do the physical work and he became complacent. Darcy ripped off Nashville for the 1st round pick - funny how Brian Burke said Darcy overvalued his players, but then turned around and signed Tiny Tim for $9million for 2 years. Darcy also got the best of the Kassian for Hodgeson and Sulzer deal. Kassian is a bust, but Hodgeson is the real deal and Sulzer has been a good player on D for us. MN paid too much for Pommer, but I'm excited cause we got some good prospects and picks. Get rid of Miller, he wants to go west - trade em. Vanek - he needs to think for himself and quit crying - I didn't see him worried about rebuilding when he got the offer from Edmonton and the Sabres matched it. Over the years, Darcy has played the cards dealt to him by his owners - you should remember he's the one who did the trades for Briere and Drury, but was handcuffed by an owner and mgmt that believed in "addition by subtraction". You also have to realize that Richards was never interested in Buffalo - he had his eye on Broadway from the get go and he's been kind of a bust there. You can't blame Leino's performance on Darcy as injuries are just what they are - Leino had no history and when he is healthy - we have seen glimpses of his chemistry and skill with Ennis. Anyway Charlie, I think you need to look at the stats a little closer before making your statements.

Pominville got soft and complancent over the years and he made a terrible captain to boot. Miller, all he does is complain. I really like Vanek, but he puts a lot of stress on himself by thinking he has to do it all and when things don't work out - its very evident in his body language and on his face. He needs to grow up a little more and we should all realize that Lindy got the best out of him, made him a better player. I thought the attitude would change when Roy was dealt away for Ott, but it really didn't happen. I for one haven't been a big fan of Stafford, but I like the way he has been playing since his benching - and I like the way the team has stepped up since Leopold, Regher and Pommer have left. The FA market is going to be thin, but the Sabres still have assets to trade - Miller, Vanek, Leino, Stafford. I would like them to keep Vanek and perhaps Leino because Leino has shown us glimpses of his talent and chemistry when healthy. Vanek has to decide whether he is on board or not. If he isn't - then let's get the best that we can for him. I would like to trade Miller for Bernier, Hiller or Niemi and trade Stafford or Leino with a prospect or draft pick for Ryan or Penner.

As far as I can see, Miller needs to focus on one thing-stop the puck. Vanek needs to put the puck in the net. This is a business fellas. You know what you signed up for. I am sure you can catch up in the summer.

Miller has every right to be upset. The team consistently leaves him hanging out to dry. It is like watching Hasek 2.0. That is what ran Hasek out of town. He was tried of bailing out a team that couldn't play smart in front of him. Buffalo needs to change its game plan to one that has a killer instinct. It is the same thing every night. If Buffalo gets a lead they try and sit on it. The other NHL teams already know how to play Buffalo. Nothing has changed in 10+ years. They don't know how to finish teams off when they have them on the ropes.

Pominville was a great player and a better teammate. He will be missed, but the Sabres will move on and look to construct a contender without Pommers. The Sabres do have some promising prospects and current players for the future which is always a positive.

I think they are both sore because it wasn't them getting out of Dodge. What player in their right mind wants to be part of this mess Darcy created? This team has had no identity in 10 years. There seems to be no real direction from our GM. I'd want out too.

Anybody who claims gaustad shouldn't have been traded should probably crawl back in the hole they came from

We are going to be stacked in the draft though the next two years. And for anyone who thought Pominville was a good Captain get serious. He was a good goal scorer and probably a good team mate but his clock ran out in Buffalo

Vanek should be happy it wasn't him! Would either have them been happier to leave? This team has been crap for years and all those who have been there longer then 3 yrs are to blame! A new coach can only do so much and bench so many players at once. They should all feel greatful that they don't have to move. Though maybe Miller would be happy in CA to be w/ the wife!

you call yourself a fan? NO fan calls their team a bunch of losers! Your the loser! A real fan sticks by their team, win or lose! So why don't you just go jump on pittsburghs bandwaggon and fuck off.

we need scoreing but we have ran into hot goalies. Plus a new coach takes time and everything. Every team has its ups and downs, but you don't get rid od players like Pommers!

Goose should of never been traded, same with Pominville! Miller and Vanek are right about this, Darcy just fucks up by giving up players that have a bright future.

We are not happy either.. Miller and Stafford are still here and we want more "W's" in the win column...

And what the fuck do Vanek and Miller care what Darcy got back for Pominville? He was a friend to them, not just an item. For crying out loud people, they can feel what they want not what you want to feel or act.

Who cares! We didn't win with him but we got 4 players for him.. He was an above average player on a team of losers. Good riddance

"It hasn’t happened in the past,” Vanek said. “Now with Jason gone, that obviously sends a message that change is happening.” So what was Roy? Collateral damage?

funny how ppl are mad at them...now when we loose both of them and all we have is draft picks then what...you get a bunch of guys who wont play for a couple years and a shitty team to watch. stop acting like everyone wasnt on Millers wood for how many years now, especially. during the olympics...and the same for Vanek when he was the league top scorer. smdh...I dont blame them, fairweather fans, bad trades, season after season of bs...I'd be pissed too

The problem with sports fans is that they think that the world revolves around them. Well here's the truth: it doesn't. Get over yourselves and stop expecting the players to be perfect in their play or other things. It's ridiculous. They're still human and they make mistakes.

You people need to shut the fuck up. Quit bashing them. Pominville was here a long time with them. They just can't believe he's gone. They have feelings too, they're not just robots. Omg.

Understandable a little, but they're players. Don't they know how it goes? That's business. They'll both be the next ones gone. Miller needs to get over himself, anyway.

None of these guys were good enough to build a team around. It's that simple, if they were they would have done better, they would have demanded more and gotten more from each other. There are others who should have been dealt before Pominville but apparently no one wanted to take them for what Darcy thought they were worth. Although, if it was me I would have gladly been ripped off in a trade to be done with Stafford.

Justin Banker via Facebook

They're mad because they want to know the direction of the team. They asked Darcy earlier if it was going to be long term or short term, because Vanek has said that he doesn't want to be part of a long term thing (1+ years) even though he would like to stay in buffalo if it was a short term thing. It is only fair Darcy doesn't need to say anything but it would be respectful. Also you can't blame him for stafford. If we don't want a 5 goal scorer for 4mil a year why would anyone else? No one wants him for a playoff push because he isn't doing great it'd be impossible to move him. Wait until the draft.

they are a bunch of cry babies...whos fault is it they are losing...theirs...get your ass in check and play like a professional and you wont have to worry about a rebuild...dont want to be here then leave...go...we dont want anyone here that doesnt want to be....sick and tried of professional sport players whining about this and that...dam they get paid enuf to put up with a little shake up now and then....ugghhhh...so pissed right now...

I'm posting the same comment I did on another feed: Sadly, Miller acts like this is all about him; that's why Luongo is still in Vancouver (goalie head cases). Vanek does as well, but to a lesser extent. They both sound pissed, like Darcy should have asked them what to do first. Funny - I don't recall GMs ever getting players' permission to make trades involving their teammates in the past. Of course Darcy isn't talking to them now; they need to focus on playing the games. After the season is the time to talk about all this. If they can't see what a deal Darcy got for 29, they are ignorant or stupid, or both.
