Sabres Waive Matt Ellis

Updated: February 10, 2013

Following this morning’s skate, Lindy Ruff announced that defenseman Robyn Regehr would play tonight after missing 7 games due to a lower-body injury.

Regehr has to be activated from injured reserve, so a corresponding roster move would need to be made.

Matt Ellis, a member of the Sabres organization since the 2008-09 season, will be made available to the entire league through the waiver process.

If no team claims Ellis, he will be sent to the AHL to play for the Rochester Americans.

In 197 games for the Buffalo Sabres, Ellis only posted 33 points (13 goals, 20 assists)  but ask anybody who has worked with Ellis and they’ll tell you that his heart and love for the game are unmatched.

Bill Hoppe, a friend of Sabres Hockey Central, says it best in this tweet.

Stay tuned to Sabres Hockey Central for the latest on this developing story.

I agree with Justin. Singling out Ellis here is a poor decision. He’s not a goal scorer, and has never been presented as one. He’s a depth guy that, while he doesn’t add offense, he rarely hurts you in your own end. That’s more than could be said for many of our other forwards, and sadly many of our defencemen.

It’s not about point production for Ellis. He is a very important part of the locker room, the players and coaches respect him. If he clears waivers and plays in Rochester, he will make an immediate impact.

You hear that same phrase from everyone one of our defensemen, Ennis, Stafford, and many others too. Singling out Ellis is a poor argument.

lulz if work ethic doesn’t translate on the ice that is a moot point. I swore I heard when ellis was on the ice by the announcer “And ellis looses the puck along the boards”

That’s a bummer. He brings more work ethic to the room than most.
