The Binghamton Senators disappointed the 3,045 fans at the Blue Cross Arena and handed the Rochester Americans their second consecutive loss, 3-1.Senator’s Robin Lehner showed why he is one of the top goalies in the AHL and with strong help from his entire team, helped the Senators to their second straight win.
The Amerks had an early edge in play to start the first period and slowly watched the Senators take control. At the 18:19 mark of the first, David Dziurzynski took a pass from forward Mark Stone and wristed a shot past Rochester goalie David Leggio to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. The second assist on the goal went to the Senators Jared Cowen.
The second period was very similar to the first with both teams having their chances, and just like the first, it took much of the period before the scoreboard was needed. With the Amerks Brayden McNabb off for cross-checking, Patrick Wiercioch fired a screen shot from the point that beat Leggio and put the Senators up 2-0. Assisting on Binghamton’s second goal were Jared Cowen and Derek Grant at the 16:55 mark.
Rochester came out for the third period and showed a little more desperation. At 5:16 of the period they were finally rewarded with Kevin Porter picking up his first goal as an Amerk. Porter recieved a pass on the face off dot from rookie Zemgus Girgensons and beat Binghamton goalie Robin Lehner to tighten up the game 2-1. Also assisting on the play was Mark Mancari. The Amerks applied strong pressure but couldn’t even up the game and with 15 seconds left, the Senators added an empty net goal. Both goalies had strong performances with Binghamton out shooting Rochester 36-33.
The Rochester Americans will be home Friday night to host their North Division rivals, the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Griffins will be looking for their first victory of the year after dropping an opening night contest to the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2, and a shoot out loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs Saturday night,4-3. The Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton,NY is the sight of the Senators next game against the Hershey Bears where they will look for their third consecutive win.
