Debate: Good Move to Keep Ruff/Regier?

Rate this post

As we passed along here yesterday afternoon, the Buffalo Sabres have decided to keep head coach Lindy Ruff and General Manager Darcy Regier for their 16th season, respectively.

The rapid response from the readers has sparked quite a debate among many people.

Every person reading this knows the positives and negatives of keeping Lindy and Darcy.

Many people feel it’s just not time for a change because Ruff/Regier have only had one full season under Pegula, where others see that Ruff/Regier have been together for 16 years and they’ve only made it to one Stanley Cup Final.

Others believe that Ruff/Regier have been unlucky in terms of getting players who don’t pan out or get injured, where others see that it’s Regier’s fault for getting the wrong player for the team and Ruff is blamed for not being able to fit a player into the system.

Those were two very plain examples. There are many, many more floating throughout Sabres fans.

What we want you to do is to vote on the poll below and please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Should the Sabres have retained Ruff/Regier?

I would have kept Lindy for half a year, got rid of Darcy a like last season ago. See how Ruff does with new GM and go from there. I don't fully blame Ruff

The fact that Pegula won't recognize the last 15 years of R and R and will only evaluate them since the beginning of his ownership is foolish at best and at the very least short sighted. They have to realize that the fans are tired of these two and a change in the front office and behind the bench was best decision. Starting over isn't a bad thing. Kevin Dineen was hired by the Panthers and they made the playoffs. The same with Ottawa and New Jersey. St. Louis changed coaches in season and look what they did. Regier and Ruff will win nothing in Buffalo and Pegula has to wake up to that fact.

If you been drilling for gas for years in the same hole and keep coming up with nothing wouldn't you change up spots and look for a new one? Ridicules!

Let's look at this logically. We need to compare Ruff's record to someone else who's been with his team as long or longer. The only current coach in any sport that is comparable is Greg Popovich with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs (he's actually one season ahead of Ruff). Popovich has led the Spurs to the playoffs 15 of his 16 years. Ruff: 8 of 15. Last 10 years: Pop: 10 ...of 10. Ruff: 4 of 10. 1st round defeats: Pop: 3, Ruff: 3. 2nd round defeats: Pop: 5, Ruff: 1. Conference Finals: Pop: 2; Ruff: 3. And now for the big one how many championships has Popovich led the Spurs to: 4. Ruff: 0. It looks to me like the Spurs are more apt to win a Championship than the Sabres are to get out of the first round. Those are the numbers and really, from what I can tell, there really is no comparision. Ruff may be a good or even "great" coach, he's probably very nice and well respected, but what he's not is a winner, the numbers speak for themselves.

Good move if you don't wanna see improvements (playoffs 2013)... I like Lindy Ruff ...on the fence about Regier but I think change is what the TEAM needs!! Not business as usual ...the fans need change!! And that's why the Sabres are there...for the FANS!!! Go Sabres...oh yeah nevermind...forgot we're done...sigh!!!

I don't really care. I just want the team to be better on the ice in 2012-13. They can get their with or without Regier/Ruff.
