Darren Dreger has reported (via Twitter) that Robyn Regehr has been asked by the Calgary Flames to waive his no movement clause for a move that would ship him to the Buffalo Sabres. The 6’3″ 225 lb. defenseman has not been given a time line for his decision. He is currently considering the move. Regehr took a deal with Calgary for less than what he would have earned on the open market in 2008 because he wanted a stable life for his family in Calgary.

Regehr is known for his rugged play and his shut down defense. This past season Regehr played in 79 games and recorded 2 goals and 15 assists for the Flames. He was also a +2, with 180 hits, 142 blocks and 58 penalty minutes. He recorded identical offensive and +/- numbers in 2009-10 with fewer hits and blocks.

The Flames will likely be looking to clear cap space with this move. I expect it to be a cheaper Sabres’ defenseman and possibly a draft pick or prospect going back the other way. Regehr’s cap hit is $4.02 Million and he is under contract through the 2012-13 season. The Flames can move Regehr because they have Jay Bouwmeester, Mark Giordano, Cory Sarich and Brett Carson under contract and a RFA in Brendan Mikkelson.

In other league news, it is being reported that C Jeff Carter has been dealt to Columbus. Apparently the deal sends Jacub Voracek a 1st round pick and a third round pick to the Flyers who must get under the salary cap in order to sign goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. This will likely upset many Sabres’ fans who were hoping for Carter to land in Buffalo. The first round pick is #8 overall.

Philadelphia has had a busy day. They have also traded C Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a draft pick. Rumors of Kris Versteeg being traded to Florida are false.

  1. To accept Kotalik and his $3M salary, we should have been receiving a draft pick, not sending a #2 to Calgary. Darcy sure played this deal into the toilet. Not that Regher won't help, he should be valuable immediately. But taking on salary unnecessarily is stupid. I suspect Kotalik and Morrisonn will make the Amerks a powerhouse, and Pegule won't flinch for a second over the wasted $5M.
